“Psychological safety is a condition in which human beings feel 1) included, 2) safe to learn, 3) safe to contribute, and 4) safe to challenge the status quo – all without fear of being embarrassed, marginalized, or punished in some way.” Creating and promoting a psychologically healthy and safe workplace means employees will feel safe to engage and address the elephant in the room and bring their whole selves to work. They will feel more empowered to defend or actively pursue a new idea, opinion or criticism without the fear of losing their job. All of this increases innovation and morale in your organization while simultaneously decreasing stress and turnover. It’s a win-win, but It’s important to remember that commitment to psychological safety is a total organizational effort and, when done correctly, can promote and sustain everlasting psychological health at work. Leadership plays a role, and we also play a role in the psychological safety of our peers. This session will address psychological safety and how we can all contribute to it in the workplace.
