Can you describe the specific challenges or skill gaps your team faced before engaging with SkillsCamp?
Before coming to Skills Camp, we saw a lot of rapid growth at the company. So this affected us in a couple of ways. We promoted team members quite quickly and we were needing to hire quite quickly as well. So we had to think about how are we preparing our future leaders and how are we supporting our current people managers. So we had a lot of team members that had never managed before that were maybe really skilled in their craft, but people management was an entirely new project. Or we've had people now that have managed people for a while, but never received any formal training. So we were finding just a very different employee experience across our globe, all in our different regions. So we really wanted to make sure we were creating programs that align the employee experience and supported our people. So supported our future leaders as we continue to grow and supported our current people managers so they have all the tools in their toolkit to be able to have one -on -ones that were really meaningful, address performance issues, be ready for the constant change.

Coming from a creative industry, the majority of the individuals that we service have been rewarded and moved into leadership roles based on their artistic abilities, not on their abilities to become a leader or to lead a team. So we've been finding that there are a lot of gaps in those skills once they move there. Couple that with finding a training organization or a trainer that can come in and relate to these individuals. I've worked in the animation industry for about seven years now. And over many opportunities, we've brought in trainers from different types of organizations that have come in. And the number one thing is we get, they're too corporate and they don't understand what we do. So they come in with three day trainings that are really set out for individuals who are working in a corporate role. The individuals that we were training were not able to relate to the way that the training was A, delivered and the type of material that was there.

Earlier in 2020, our company was really quick to adapt from work from home. We went remote like pretty much before the pandemic really started. But what we ended up seeing after a few months of the new way of working was we saw challenges in collaboration and communication emerge pretty rapidly. And that's when we reached out to SkillsCamp.

How did SkillsCamp's programs address these challenges?
Yes, so we approached this in two -folds by creating two different programs. We created a program that was centered on creating our future leaders. So it focused on how do you be an indirect leader in the business and provide some base level leadership skills. We then created a People Leader Academy that focused on addressing our people managers and preparing them with their toolkit to be successful.
So we created really meaningful programs to make sure team members were able to talk about feedback, were able to receive feedback, give feedback, were able to talk about performance openly, and were able to be receptive to the change that we were seeing. So we've seen a lot of great impact with this as well, but that is a directly influence of how SkillsCamp address these issues. So we've partnered to really focus on how do we...prepare our team members with the theory and partner it with on the job application and created programs that really address this.

So when we brought in SkillsCamp, the number one thing that came out after the very first session was, Bailey took the time to understand what we do. They understand, she understands the type of roles we have and you took the time to really make a connection with them. So it was very easy to build trust. And that is what building the trust with these people has made all the difference because they then take in the information it wasn't thrown at them they felt very much part of the process.
With the online delivery, I think it actually helped bring our teams together. There's a lot of people that because of time zones, because they're on different projects, they don't get to actually talk to each other. So I keep hearing a lot of times, oh, I met this person when we were in our skills camp session, we talked about X, Y, Z. So it helped build connections within the organization. I think also the type of delivery, even though we were online, it was still very personal. Bailey, yourself, the other trainers that have come in, again, have taken the time to like reach out, speak to people, to come into the breakout rooms just to help guide the conversation. And again, that will also help build a connection with the training crew, but it also helped build the connections within the organization.

SkillsCamp created a tailored curriculum based on our needs and what I kind of shared in terms of feedback from our leadership team, where we were kind of falling short with our remote work. And SkillsCamp created a curriculum to address these concerns. So we had topics such as, you know, understanding your leadership style and how to utilize it and effective communication, you know, when you're working in a remote team or teams that have different functions, very different functions, yeah.

What tangible improvements or results have you observed in your team or organization since completing the training with SkillsCamp? Any specific stories?
Future leaders starting there, we've had with our last cohort, so our cohort number two, we had a 46 % promotion rate with those team members. So I think that really shows the impact that the program has on preparing the team and preparing team members to be ready for that next opportunity and have some of that skill set to be able to enter those people leaders. Many of those are now within our People Leader Academies that we have. So the improvements I've seen have been a lot with, have been a lot with confidence. So we have our team members coming into conversations a lot more confidently and self -reflective being like, I am more competent. I feel more prepared for this. And I think that, is a lot in itself to celebrate and reward as well, is helping with that imposter syndrome of some of these team members being new. But we have seen some great improvements on our one -on -ones that we're having with team members. We've seen more knowledgeable conversations on performance management and addressing performance issues, which really impacts the employee experience as a whole as well.

One that really stands out to me was we were having an employee relations issue. It was quite difficult and quite challenging, and it was with one of our creative leaders. Myself and one of the other HR team had a coaching session with that individual to come in to kind of help him work through how he was going to approach the situation. When we came there, he had taken out his skills camp materials and had worked through the leadership training and said, okay, I've learned this. This is how based on what I've learned in my skillscamp session, this is how I think to approach it. And to be very honest, I couldn't have given him better advice. He had it. He had amazing ways. It was very empathetic. It was very open. And he was, you know, he had learned so much and he just wanted to share what he had learned with his team to help them do better.

Yeah, we noticed an improvement in efficiency and cross-team collaboration. On top of that, there was general improvement in employee morale as well. For example, in the leadership style session, most, if not all the folks at our company didn't really know what their leadership style was. And we had this side chat where we were just discussing what our leadership style means and leaning into those styles as well, right? So if you are like you have a servant leadership style, you want to empower those around you, right? And knowing that, and that's how you work effectively, and that's how you find meaning in your work, we found a lot of people were starting to lean into their leadership styles more confidently, and then down the road, excel at their work even more.

How do you see the skills learned at SkillsCamp continuing to impact your team or organization in the future?
One element that we're focusing on is our performance process and how do we...modernize it and how do we make it impactful for all team members? And this is going to rely really heavily on having strong conversations on feedback, feeling comfortable having two -way feedback and making sure that team members are confident in giving and receiving that feedback and managers are confident in giving that feedback, receiving that feedback and addressing performance issues. So we really need to make sure that that, is solid before we go into these new processes.
So because of these programs, this has allowed us to focus on what does the future look like for us? What do we need to make sure as our foundation to be able to roll out these processes that will make such an impact for us? So we'll be able to focus now on updating our performance process, being able to.

So I reached out to our director of production and I wanted to give you almost her direct quote. She said, I've seen the team blossom and understand themselves more and how they react to situations. The daily ways that they conduct themselves and the things they say and do add to the team dynamics. It's also opened the floor to have conversations about stress, personality, communications that everyone could speak to and relate to because we all took the same course. We've bonded as a team deeper and a more authentic level.

So the lesson skills camp taught us over our engagement has long-term implications for everyone here. We're able to work better, we're able to work faster, more effectively. There's less friction between team members long-term, you know, someone working in one team versus another. It doesn't really matter functionally if their roles are different. They're able to communicate in a style that can get things done quickly, efficiently. And that's been incredibly helpful on top of building our employees up. Uh, over the course of someone's career, you want to make sure that they're building, they have the building blocks to become great managers, you know, executives down the road and the soft skills that they built with skills camp definitely is, is adding to that.

Would you recommend SkillsCamp to other organizations, and if so, why?
I would wholeheartedly recommend SkillsCamp to any organization looking to partner for any program. SkillsCamp has truly been so valuable in this process and has been such a valuable partner. The knowledge SkillsCamp brings to the table and the engagement the facilitators bring to each session are truly so valuable and make a wild difference in our experience.
It has allowed us to lean very heavily on SkillsCamp to bring the theory, bring it to life and for us to focus on pairing it with on-the-job application and bringing it to the organization in a way to make sure that those are paired very nicely. Aside from creating fantastic content and engagement, the support the team offers through it all is next level. So SkillsCamp is beyond professional, is accessible at any moment that you need to workshop an idea, talk through, problem solve; they are always there. So I would recommend SkillsCamp to any organization.

You know, it has had a tremendous impact. It is, I continuously, it's, you know, we started the first sessions, I think, in 2021. You know, following the first sessions, I kept getting asked when we would do more. I continue to be asked when we're gonna have more skills camp training, not when we're gonna have more training, you know, when we're gonna do more leadership training, it's when we're gonna have more skills camp training. And I think to me, That is the biggest endorsement I could give anyone. People related to it, they felt heard, they felt like they've learned something and it has had an impact. And I couldn't stress enough how the team has felt empowered to move forward. And they do feel like they have much more skills to deal with some of the difficult situations that they have. And it's down to the fact that your team has taken the time to ensure that they understand the type of individuals that they're delivering it to, what's important to them, and in a way that's approachable.

I would highly recommend Skills Camp to organizations of any size really that are interested in building up their employees to be better leaders, better communicators, better team players, to get things done quicker, to get things done efficiently and to build team morale as well. I think some of the lessons that we took that were taught with Skills Camp made our employees very introspective and helped them learn a lot about themselves as well the impact of that was that they were better in their job.
