Our Approach to Learning and Leadership

At SkillsCamp, we design learning experiences rooted in adult learning principles, motivation science, and leadership frameworks, empowering people with skills that drive personal and professional growth.

Our Approach to Learning Design

From pedagogical to andragogical.

Designing a learning experience that meets the specific needs of a diverse population of adult learners requires a combination of mixed andragogical approaches. For example, this includes explaining to learners why learning is designed the way it is as well as acknowledging and incorporating their previous experiences into the session.

Adult Learning AKA Andragogy

Based on Malcolm Knowles’ Theory of Andragogy, we will design the curriculum with the 6 Principles of Adult Learning as our foundation. The 6 principles are:

Knowing this, we will ensure that the curriculum is designed to empower adult learners to be part of their educational journey, as well as provide them with practical, relevant applications for their learning.

To continue to empower adult learners, infuse our learning with the science of motivation and incorporate Keller & Angelo’s M-ARCS-V Model of Motivation. To motivate students to learn, we must attend to their:

To design for various learning preferences, there are many modes of instruction to use beyond simply lecturing and we employ all that will work best for your context. For example:

Our Approach to Leadership

At SkillsCamp, we believe leadership evolves beyond traditional models like transformational leadership, where the focus is primarily on inspiring individuals and driving organizational change. We embrace a more expansive approach—Imperative Leadership, which builds on the foundation of Transcendent Leadership to address leadership in the complexities of today’s world.

Transcendent Leadership

Transcendent Leadership integrates leadership of self, others, and organizations, envisioning leaders who can connect with individuals at a deeper level and inspire growth within their teams and organizations. This model reflects a broader, more inclusive view of leadership, recognizing that truly impactful leaders must understand the broader ecosystems in which they operate.

Imperative Leadership

Imperative Leadership takes this even further. It adds a critical layer: leadership of systems. In a world that is increasingly interconnected, leaders must go beyond managing people and teams—they must have the insight and foresight to lead and shape systems. This approach emphasizes sustainable, long-term success by recognizing the interdependence of individuals, organizations, and the wider environment.

At SkillsCamp, we help leaders move through these layers—developing leadership of self, others, organizations, and systems—creating an integrated, sustainable approach to leadership that is fit for the complexities of today’s world. Our programs empower leaders to build thriving ecosystems where people, organizations, and communities grow together.

Our Approach to Coaching

All coaching is “Growth Coaching”

At SkillsCamp, we believe that all coaching is fundamentally about growth. Coaching Values

We Balance Client & Coachee Needs

Our coaching honors the goals of both our clients and coachees. We strive to align with client objectives while putting the coachee’s growth and goals first. Every session is focused on the coachee, ensuring that their progress remains our top priority.

We Make It Personal

Every coaching engagement is customized to fit the individual. We gather relevant information through pre-coaching forms, understanding personal goals, and ensuring that each session addresses specific needs. Whether through tailored feedback or personal reflection, we ensure each experience is bespoke.

We Are Adaptable

Flexibility is key in our coaching practice. Whether it’s rescheduling or pivoting to meet evolving needs, we adapt to ensure that every coachee gets the most out of their coaching experience. We understand that life happens, and we’re here to provide support when it’s needed most.

We’re Anti-Oppressive

We take an anti-oppressive approach, acknowledging and addressing the barriers that coachees may face due to systemic inequalities. Whether it's stress, poverty, or neurodivergence, we create safe spaces where everyone can express themselves and grow, regardless of their starting point.
